The Nkwanta South Municipal Assembly held a townhall meeting
on Thursday, September 3, 2026, under the theme "Accounting to the People;
A Step Towards Peace and Development."
The meeting afforded the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) the
opportunity to account for his stewardship since assuming office, particularly
regarding ongoing developmental projects within the municipality, and to
respond to questions from citizens.
Among the dignitaries present were Mustapha Gbande, Deputy Director of Operations at the Office of the President, representing the President, John Dramani Mahama; the Oti Regional Minister, Hon. John Kwadwo Gyapong; the Member of Parliament (MP), for the area, Hon. Geoffrey Kini; chiefs, queen mothers, and their entourages from the various traditional areas within the municipality; heads of institutions; heads of security agencies; and members of the general public. The program commenced with a cultural display to usher in the dignitaries.
The Member of Parliament was the first to address the
gathering. He commended the MCE for organizing the townhall meeting, describing
it as a testament to the good work being done by the MCE and the Assembly, and
pledged to organize a similar engagement in the future to outline his own
developmental achievements within the municipality.
The Oti Regional Minister, Hon. John Kwadwo Gyapong, also commended the MCE for convening the meeting. He stressed on the need for peace within Nkwanta, encouraging the chiefs and
the people to embrace coexistence, reminding them that they are one people.
The MCE, Hon. Joseph Awal Antwi, was then invited to the podium, amid a round of applause, to give account of his stewardship. He began with a brief statistics on the municipality, noting a population of 135,936 as at the 2021 census, a land area of 2,473 square kilometres, and a population density of 55 persons per square kilometre. He stated that Nkwanta South Municipality is the largest in the Oti Region in terms of geographical area, with agriculture central to livelihoods of the people, including crops such as cassava, yam, cocoyam, cowpea, and cocoa.
He proceeded to outline developmental projects completed
under his stewardship, supported by photographic images for the audience's
benefit. These included a 3-unit classroom block at Mamfi Kope; a 3-unit
classroom block at Nkpaya; a KG block at Nkpaya; the procurement and embossment of educational furniture; and CHPS
compounds with nurses' accommodation at Vume and Jumbo, drilling of boreholes, among
others project completed and others ongoing. He also outlined projects earmarked for award to contractors.
Following his presentation, the floor was opened for questions. Citizens raised issues including project funding sources and amounts, compensation for conflict victims, sports, among others. The MCE responded to each question and also added that his doors remain open to anyone who wants to seek clarification on any matter.
The MCE concluded by appealing to all inhabitants of the municipality to live in peace with one another..
