Vital records

BIRTHS AND DEARTHS REGISTRY Vital registration began as far back as 1888 in then Gold Coast. The law establishing it has seen a number of amendments. It started as cemeteries Ordinance and was limited to death registration mostly by expatriate workers of then colonial government. The cemeteries Ordinance was first amended in 1981 and later became Births, Deaths and Burial ordinance in 1912. In 1926, the Births, Deaths Burial ordinance was also amended and replaced with registration of Births and Deaths Act 301 of 1965. After 55 years of its enforcement, this Act was finally replaced with Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 2020 (Act 1027) on 6th October 2020. Issuance of certified copy of entry in Births and Deaths Registers REQUIREMENTS FOR BIRTH REGISTRATION: The birth of every child is to be registered in the district where the child was born. 1. Child health records/weighing card/Maternal card 2. Baptismal card before the child turned five(5) years old/child dedication card. 3. Affidavits from court or commissioner of oaths Importance of birth Registration Registration of births & deaths. Act, 2020 (1027) 1. Establishes the identity of the child. 2. Establishes parentage and nationality of the child 3. Gives legal recognition and protection to the child 4. Facilitates enrollment into school 5. Facilitates acquisition of travel documents e.g passport, visa etc. BENEFITS OF DEATH REGISTRATION: 1. It grants administrative rights in management of deceased's estate. 2. Access to social(insurance and Pension) benefits. 3. Analysis of data generated from death registration help in social interventions. 4. Reviewing census data, national identification records, etc.
